Closed Syllables
1 vowel
+ 1 or more consonants
a short vowel sound

A closed syllable is a short word or short part of a word that has only one vowel. It has a consonant (maybe 2) after it.  The letters that come before the vowel do not matter.

The vowel in a closed syllable has the short sound. Some closed syllables are "at," "hit," "brick" and "stitch".
Here is a fun book full of closed syllable words.

Open Syllables
1 vowel
+ nothing after it
a long vowel sound

An open syllable is a short word or short part of a longer words that has one vowel at the end. There is no other letters after the one vowel.  What comes before the vowel does not matter.
The vowel sound is the long sound. Some open syllable words are "I," "be," "she".  More often, an open syllable is part of a longer word, like "ti-ger" or "ba-by." The vowel sound is long.

Open and Closed Syllables

Tapper-e Syllables
1 vowel
+ 1 consonant
+ e at the end
long vowel

Syllables with one vowel, one consonant and an "e" at the end are called tapper-e or magic-e syllables.
The "e" is silent and the other vowel sound is long.
Some tapper-e syllables are "ate," "ride," and "stone".

A lot of short, closed syllable words can be changed into a tapper-e by adding an "e" to the end of them.
The vowel sound changes from short to long when the "e" is added.
Here is an activity to help you practice changing the vowel sounds from short to long.

Vowel Teams (also called digraphs)
- two vowels - the first one is long and the second one is silent.

o + a = long o

a + i = long a
a + y = long a
The ea vowel team usually says long e
Sort words that are vowel teams or not.
